A volunteer council, built on trust.

The Asian American Law Enforcement Advisory Council is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit in New York City. For more than thirty years we have brought Asian American communities and the officers who serve them to the same table.

Our mission

Bring law enforcement and Asian American communities together, and keep them together.

Unite officers and community

Connect Asian American law enforcement officers with the communities they come from and serve.

Diversity and inclusion

Promote understanding, representation, and respect within law enforcement and the public it protects.

Fair and equal justice

Advocate for justice that treats every community fairly, no matter the language they speak or where they were born.

Research and education

Support the education and research that make neighborhoods safer and public safety smarter.

Why we exist

Immigrant communities and the police who serve them are safer when they know one another.

We began in New York's Korean-American community in 1997. The need was simple and urgent. Newcomers did not always know how to reach the police, and the police did not always know how to reach them. We set out to close that gap.

As anti-Asian hate crimes rose, the work could not stop at one community. We widened to stand with all Asian American New Yorkers, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Pakistani, Japanese, and more. The name became the Asian American Law Enforcement Advisory Council. The mission was the same one we started with.

What guides us

Four things we hold to.

Trust

It is the whole point. Everything we do is in service of trust between people who need each other.

Service

We are volunteers. We show up because the work matters, not because it pays.

Solidarity

No community should face hate or fear alone. We stand together, across every Asian American community.

Continuity

Three decades and counting. The relationships we build are meant to outlast any one of us.

Leadership

Led by volunteers, rooted in the community.

The council is guided by a volunteer Board of Directors and an executive committee drawn from the communities we serve, working alongside NYPD precincts and partner organizations across the city. They give their time so this work can keep going.
